What To Pack On Safari: The Ultimate Tourist’s Guide

Heading away on safari is an exciting opportunity to see animals in the wild and experience an entirely different culture. But it is important to pack the correct clothing, items, and equipment to ensure your experience goes as smoothly as possible. This all starts with your main luggage and carry-on baggage. Below, we outline some important packing aspects to consider when travelling on safari.

Plastic bags

Be aware that plastic bags are outlawed in Kenya. This law was passed in August 2017 and is unforced quite strictly. Be sure to replace any plastic bags in your main suitcase or hand luggage with other materials. Although most plastic bag fines are targeted towards retailers and commercial companies, it is recommended you stay within the law. Paper bags, canvas, and other materials are great alternatives.

Documents

It goes without saying, but you require key documents in order to fly to Kenya. This includes a valid passport, boarding card, and vaccination certificates. You will also need to pack enough money for the duration of the trip, and carry a credit card. Photocopies of travel insurance and visas are also recommended.

Clothing

There is a 15 kilogram weight limit for luggage on light aircraft, so be aware of this when packing. Comfortable walking boots or shoes are recommended, as is a hat, waterproof jacket, and a warm undergarment or coat. Bring a few pairs of shirts, shorts, and trousers. Ideally, green or khaki coloured clothing is best for safari. But avoid camouflage patterns, since only the army is permitted to wear this in Kenya.

Laundry

Laundry services are often limited once on location in national parks. But some washing can be done at a number of camps and accommodation areas. Usually laundry is limited to a few small items (not underwear or other personal garments). Materials may be provided so you can do your own washing, but this depends on the facilities available. Try to pack within the limit while ensuring plenty of clothing.

Toiletries / medicines

If you have prescription medication, bring enough supply to last longer than the trip. A doctor’s note may be needed in the case of controlled drugs. It is also a good idea to make a note of the ‘generic’ drug (non-branded) names. Malaria tablets, sun lotion, insect repellent, and typical toiletries like toothpaste should also be included

Other essentials

Don’t forget to pack your camera to capture all the magnificent sights while on safari. Sunglasses are often helpful, especially during the peak time of the day when the sun is at its most harmful. Binoculars are also recommended. If you bring electrical items, be sure to remember charging leads and extra batteries if required.
