5 Day Tsavo West, Amboseli & Tsavo East Safari from Mombasa

5 Day Tsavo West, Amboseli & Tsavo East Safari from Mombasa

This five-day safari from Mombasa or Diani takes in three of Kenya’s best-known parks in one loop. Start in Tsavo West, with the crystal-clear pools of Mzima Springs and the black lava of the Shetani flows, then head to Amboseli for close-up elephant encounters beneath Mount Kilimanjaro. Finish with two nights in Tsavo East, Kenya’s largest national park, exploring Mudanda Rock, Lugard Falls and the Galana River before returning to the coast. Choose between two lodge combinations; the route and game drives are the same.

Itinerary

Day 1: Mombasa or Diani – Tsavo West National Park (LD)

Pick up from your hotel in Mombasa or Diani and drive inland to Tsavo West National Park, arriving in time for lunch at your lodge. In the afternoon, head out on a game drive and visit Mzima Springs, where millions of litres of crystal-clear water bubble up each day from beneath the lava rock, forming pools where hippos and crocodiles can be watched from an underwater viewing chamber. Tsavo West is a rugged, beautiful wilderness of volcanic hills, the black Shetani lava flows, open grassland and acacia woodland, home to elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, hippos and rich birdlife. Dinner and overnight at your chosen lodge (see lodge options below).

Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: Tsavo West National Park – Amboseli National Park (FB)

After breakfast, drive to Amboseli National Park, arriving in time for check-in and lunch. Amboseli sits at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, and its swamps, fed by underground water from the mountain, draw large herds of elephants along with zebras, wildebeest, giraffes and lions. After a short rest, enjoy an afternoon game drive until sunset with Kilimanjaro as your backdrop. Dinner and overnight at your chosen lodge.

Day 3: Amboseli National Park – Tsavo East National Park (FB)

Rise early for a morning game drive, when Kilimanjaro is often at its clearest, then return for breakfast and drive to Tsavo East National Park, arriving in time for lunch. Tsavo East is Kenya’s largest national park, known for its red-dust elephants, the palm-lined Galana River and the Yatta Plateau, one of the longest lava flows in the world. It is also famous for the “man-eaters of Tsavo”, two lions that attacked workers building the Uganda Railway in 1898. After a short rest, head out on an afternoon game drive until sunset. Dinner and overnight at your chosen lodge.

Day 4: Full Day in Tsavo East National Park (FB)

After an early breakfast, set out to look for big cats returning from their night’s hunting. Visit Mudanda Rock, a long granite outcrop above a natural waterhole where elephants often gather, and Lugard Falls, where the Galana River rushes through rocky channels. Return to the lodge for lunch and a swim, then head out again at around 3:30 PM for an afternoon game drive until sunset. All meals and overnight at your chosen lodge.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5: Tsavo East National Park – Mombasa or Diani (BL)

After breakfast, enjoy a final morning game drive, then check out and drive back to the coast with a game drive on the way out of the park. Drop-off at your beach hotel in Mombasa or Diani.
