3 Day Samburu Safari from Nairobi
Samburu National Reserve feels like a different Kenya. About 340 km north of Nairobi, the green highlands give way to red earth, doum palms and dry acacia country, cut through by the Ewaso Nyiro River. The river is the reserve’s lifeline, drawing elephants, lions, leopards and cheetahs to its banks, along with crocodiles and hippos in the water.
Samburu is the place to see the “Samburu Special Five”, animals adapted to Kenya’s dry north that you won’t find in the Mara or Amboseli: the reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Beisa oryx, long-necked gerenuk and Somali ostrich. It is also far quieter than the southern parks, so you often have a sighting to yourself. Pack light clothes for the hot days and something warm for the cool evenings.
